A majestic monumental compound, strongly desired by King Ferdinand of Bourbon. Nowadays it is part of the World Cultural Heritage of Unesco

The compound originated from the King’s utopian dream: the creation of an autonomous community named “Ferdinandopoli”.
The Royal Colony of San Leucio, at first, was just a hiding where the King used to go when he was tired of the court intrigues.
But, in 1778, something shocking happened: the heir to the throne died of smallpox.
The passing of his beloved son touched King’s heart so deeply that he decided to build a hospice for the poor, and a factory to give them something to work for.
The colony of San Leucio grew shortly, the requests for silk came from all Europe. The silk factory still shows machines and tools for the silk manufacturing and wooden frames in excellent conditions.
The Royal Palace is surrounded by two residential districts, the discrict of San Carlo and the district of San Ferdinando, connected with the same palace by a a double ramped staircase which reaches the Belvedere.
Inside the Royal Apartments it is possible to admire the wonderful frescos refferring to the myth of Arianna, decorating the ceiling, and the luxurious bathroom of the Queen Maria Carolina, with its huge marble bathtub, still in perfect conditions.
