The first news about Castel Sant’Elmo came around 1275. In 1329 Robert of Anjou asked the sculptor and architect Tino di Caimano to turn the building in a real “Palatium” , with two towers, for the king and the Court. In 1348 the documents define the building a Castrum Sancti Erasmi, for the presence of a chapel dedicated to Sant’Erasmo.
In 1456 a terrible earthquake caused the fall of the towers. The Aragoneses restored the building. During the Spanish Vice-realm (1504-1707), the castle, called Sant’Ermo and then Sant’Elmo, maybe because of a slight mispronunciation of the name Erasmo, was turned into a defensive fortress.
In 1547, Pietro Prato built the Church, destroyed in 1587 by a thunder and restored between 1599 and 1610.
Since 1860, Castel Sant’Elmo became a military prison. In 1976 the castle was restored for 7 years, during which the old structures, the ancient paths and the basements were recovered.
Castle Sant’Elmo with its beautiful square offers an astonishing view of all the city and the Gulf of Naples.
