The compound of the San Martino Chartehouse is one of the greatest example of architecture and baroque art. It’s the second oldest charterhouse in Campania and hosts a thousand rooms, two churches, a courtyard, three clausters, four chapels and wonderful roof gardens.
It was built in 1325 , occupied by the Chartusian Monks in 1337 and consecrated in 1368, under the Reign of the Queen Joan I of Anjou.
Between the XVI and the XVII century the original structure of the San Martino Charterhouse was transformed by so many artists. Only the basements remain the same.
The Chartusian monks were accused of Jacobinism and kicked out in 1799. In 1866 the homonymous museum was annexed to the Charterhouse, becoming a property of the Italian State.
The National Museum of San Martino, nowadays, tells the story of the city from the Bourbon Age, to the post-unification period.
The basements host the Sculpture Section of the Museum. Within the walls of the old kitchens there’s the “Nativity Section” with an eighteen -century crib, ” il Presepe Cuciniello” -The Cuciniello’s crib, one of the best examples of the Neapolitan crib art.
The old Pharmacy hosts the sketch of the Veiled Christ, made by Antonio Corradini and used by Giuseppe Sanmartino as a source of inspiration while giving life to his masterpiece.
Other important historical witnesses are hidden in the Carriage and in the Naval section, kept inside the Opera Museum and inside the Room of the Memories and Images of the City.
This is a must-visit for the most curious travelers.
