The Flavian Amphitheatre is considered, for its dimensions, the third in the ancient world, after the Coliseum and the Amphitheatre of Capua.
It is located at the crossroad between the main streets to Naples, Capua and Cumae.
It presents 4 mayor and 12 minor entrances, and a pit for 40.000 spectators.
Its basements show the complex organisation of the services during the shows.
The first Christian martyrdoms took place in this arena. According to the tradition of the V- VI century, here, in 305 A.D. was prepared the execution of San Gennaro and his companions. Then they were sentenced to death and executed at the Pozzuoli Solfatara.
A unique historical evidence of the trade activites in the ancient Puteoli is the “Temple of Serapis”, so called after the discovery of a statue of Serapis, god of Egypt, now conserved in the Archeological Museum of Naples.
The structure is one of the best examples of the Roman Macellum, an important market, built between the end of the I century and the beginning of the II century A.D., and restored at the Severi times.
The shops were aligned on the sides of a great marble paved yard
In the background there’s a room for the imperial cult and for the worship of the gods of trade (including Serapis).
The columns in the temple of Serapis are the most evident measurers of the bradyseims phenomenon.
