Since 1700 this place has attracted travelers and artists, like Piranesi and Goethe.
The building of the temples began a few decades after the founding of the city of Paestum, whose name was originally Poseidonia, in 600 b.C.
Some settlers coming from Sybaris (Calabria), settled in the south of the river Sele.
The temples emerge in the city center, surrounded by one of the best preserved city walls in the World.
Between the temples there was the “market”, the main square of the city, where the town meetings took place and where the citizens worshipped the empty grave of the founder of Paestum.
The inhabitated discrits surrounded the temples and the market, and nowdays it is possible to see archaeological remains of the Imperial Age (I-V century b.C.)
